Generic Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria are subject to change on an annual basis. The College has generic eligibility criteria which all applicants to any SET Program must satisfy. Please refer to the College policy for full details of the generic eligibility criteria which are also summarised below:

  1. Applicants must register with the College for selection (see link below to the College website)
  2. Applicants to the SET Program must have permanent residency or citizenship of Australia or New Zealand at the time of registration
  3. Applications must have current and valid medical registration from the Medical Board of Australia or Medical Council of New Zealand. In Australia this is General (unconditional) registration and in New Zealand this is General scope or restricted general scope registration in the neurosurgery.
  4. Applicants must consent to a full criminal history check including the submission of relevant documentation on request to enable this to be undertaken.

Neurosurgery Specific Eligibility Criteria

In addition to the generic eligibility criteria applicants to the Surgical Education and Training Program in Neurosurgery must have completed a minimum eight week full time equivalent neurosurgical rotation at some point between January 2009 and the closing date for applications resulting in a satisfactory Neurosurgery Eligibility Assessment Report (“Eligibility Report”). A satisfactory Eligibility Report is:

  2. Completed by the consultant neurosurgeon with primary responsibility for the supervision and assessment of the applicant during the neurosurgical rotation; and
  3. The consultant neurosurgeon has responded “Yes” to every question within the Eligibility Report; and
  4. The consultant neurosurgeon has signed the Eligibility Report; and
  5. The Eligibility Report is submitted by the applicant during the selection application process.

Only one Eligibility Report, satisfying the criteria above, needs to be submitted even if the applicant has completed multiple neurosurgical rotations under different supervisors. The Eligibility Report is submitted during the application phase of the selection process.
