Selection Process
Overview
The selection process to the Surgical Education and Training Program in Neurosurgery is highly competitive. Full details of the selection process are provided in the Regulations which can be downloaded here. The following is provided as a guide only. For more detailed information please refer to the Regulations.
The selection process uses three selection tools, each contributing the following weightings to the overall selection score out of 100, rounded to the nearest whole number:
- Structured Curriculum Vitae 15%
- Structured Referee Reports 40%
- Neurosurgery Semi-Structured Interview 45%
Not all applicants are eligible to present for the Neurosurgery Semi-Structured Interview (“the Interview”). Applicants must satisfy the following minimum criterions to be eligible for the Interview:
- Applicants must be in the top 90% of applicants based on their overall score for the Structured Curriculum Vitae selection tool alone; and
- Applicants must be in the top 65% of applicants based on their overall score for the Structured Referee Reports selection tool alone.
Applicants who fail to satisfy either minimum criterion will not be eligible to present for the Interview and will not be considered further in the selection process. These applicants will be deemed unsuitable.
Applicants who satisfy both minimum criterions will be eligible to present for the Interview. The Interviews for all eligible applicants will be held on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 July 2012 in Melbourne.
Applicants attending the Interview must be scored as suitable or above in each of the eight sections of the Interview to be deemed suitable for selection. Applicants who fail this minimum standard will be deemed unsuitable and will not be considered further in the selection process.
Suitable applicants following the Interview will be ranked by combining the individual selection tool scores (with selection tool weightings applied) to provide an overall selection score. Applying this process the overall selection score is made up of the Structured Curriculum Vitae (15), the Structured Referee Reports (40) and the Interview (45).
In the event that two or more applicants receive the same overall selection score, the Interview selection tool score will be the differentiating factor. In the event that applicants have the same Interview selection tool score, the Structured Referee Reports selection tool will be the differentiating factor. In the event the applicants receive the same Structured Referee Reports score the Board will make the final decision.
The number of offers expected to be made as part of the Surgical Education and Training Program intake for 2013 is 9. The intake is an estimate and subject to change without further notice. The intake is determined by the number of available training positions taking into consideration the movement of existing trainees.
Applicants who attended the Interview and were deemed suitable for selection as a result will be notified of the outcome of their application on 16 July 2012. Suitable applicants who rank high enough in comparison to the intake will be deemed successful and will be allocated to a training position. All other suitable applicants who do not rank high enough to be offered a position will be deemed unsuccessful.
Referee Reports
All applicants must provide contact details including a valid email address for:
- The three most recent consultant neurosurgeons who have had direct supervision and responsibility for the applicant while undertaking a neurosurgical rotation for a minimum eight weeks full time equivalent between January 2009 and the closing date for applications. These are the primary referees.
- Two additional supervising consultants (any discipline including neurosurgery) who have had direct supervision and responsibility for the applicant during a rotation for a minimum eight weeks full time equivalent undertaken between January 2009 and the closing date. These are the alternate referees. In selecting alternate referees please note that a maximum of three referees (primary and alternates) can be selected from any one rotation.
Institutions and listed individuals by applicants may be contacted to verify compliance with this requirement and failure to comply will result in the applicant being deemed unsuitable for selection.
