Professional Performance Assessment (New)

The assessment of performance by the supervisor is fundamental to continuing satisfactory progression. Each accredited position has an approved surgical supervisor. The supervisor is responsible for the supervision and assessment of the trainee(s) in that position(s).

The Professional Performance Assessment (PPA) Report is a new assessment tool which applies to trainees commencing on the SET Program in Neurosurgery from 2012 onwards.  This assessment tool replaces the In-Training Assessment Report.  The Professional Performance Assessment (PPA) Report is not used to assess trainees who commenced on the SET Program prior to the 2012 training year.

In Training Assessment

The assessment of performance by the supervisor is fundamental to continuing satisfactory progression. Each accredited position has an approved surgical supervisor. The supervisor is responsible for the supervision and assessment of the trainee(s) in that position(s).  Completion of the in training assessment report, on the prescribed form, must be undertaken at the conclusion of each three month rotation during SET1 and each six month rotation during SET2, SET3, SET5 and SET6 for trainees who commenced on the SET Program prior to the 2012 training year.

Trainees commencing on the SET Program from the 2012 training year onwards are not assessed using the In-Training Assessment Report which has been replaced with the Professional Performance Assessment Report (see menu option below).

Operative Experience

Appropriately supervised operative experience obtained during clinical training, including good case mixes and case loads, are essential learning opportunities for trainees to acquire the necessary technical skills and expertise to practice as an independent neurosurgical consultant.

Competency Assessments

The Board introduced core and elective workplace competency assessment forms as a mechanism for the continuous assessment of the suitability and progression of trainees. Trainees commencing on the SET Program prior to the 2012 training year are required to complete the core and elective workplace competencies.

The core and elective workplace competency assessment forms will be replaced with three competency assessment forms for trainees commencing on the SET Program in the 2012 training year or later. There is one competency assessment form for each stage of the SET Program. This competency assessment forms include the core procedural competencies and components of the current in-training assessment form relating to clinical and technical skills.
