Training Seminars

The training seminars deliver topics, on a rotational basis which an emphasis on the competencies of medical expertise, technical expertise and judgement, and clinical decision making.  Attendance at training seminars during SET1 is optional but not compulsory. Trainees must satisfactorily complete two compulsory training seminars for each year during SET2, 3, 4 and 5.

ASSET Course

The Australian and New Zealand Surgical Skills Education and Training (ASSET) course replaces the previous UK-based Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) course and provides an educational package of generic surgical skills required by surgical Trainees in the Australian and New Zealand context. ASSET is a compulsory aspect of surgical training and is usually undertaken within the first year of training and can also be undertaken prior to surgical training.

CCrISP Course

The Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) course assists trainees in developing simple, useful skills for managing critically ill patients, and promotes the coordination of multidisciplinary care where appropriate. SET2 trainees must satisfactorily complete the CCriSP Course during their second year of training (SET2) or earlier.

EMST Course

 The EMST Course is a two and half day intensive course in the management of injury victims in the first 1-2 hours following injury. Trauma is a major killer of young people in Australia and New Zealand. Trainees must complete the EMST Course prior to the end of their SET3 training year.
