Generic Surgical Science Examination

The Generic Surgical Science Examination tests trainees’ knowledge, understanding and application of Anatomy, Pathology and Physiology, in health and disease as they apply to generic and specialty specific situations. This Examination must be satisfactorily completed during SET1 (the first year of training).

Clinical Examination

 The emphasis of the Clinical Examination is on the application of basic science knowledge and understanding and clinical practice relevant to all forms of surgery. Trainees spend 5 minutes at each of 16 assessed stations. The Clinical Examination must be satisfactorily completed during SET1 of the SET Program in Neurosurgery.

Neurosurgery Surgical Science Examination

Trainees are required to complete the Neurosurgery Surgical Science Examination by the end of SET2.  The majority of the MCQ based questions witin the Examiantion are neurosurgical anatomy with the remainder focused on pathology and physiology/drug questions relevant to neurosurgery.

Fellowship Examination

 The Fellowship Examination in Neurosurgery must be completed during the SET6 (final) training year. The Fellowship Examination comprises 7 separate segments: 2 written papers and 5 clinical/viva segments.  Further details, including past Fellowship Examination papers are available here.
